Not clear from the source

  • The council page doesn't mention a chemical toilet or grey waste disposal point at The Haugh. Some older third-party sources mention one – Wader hasn't stated it because the official page doesn't.
  • The page doesn't give a number of motorhome spaces.

One official stop, and it's free

The Scottish Borders approach is simple: there's one council car park where you can sleep in your motorhome – The Haugh in Hawick – and it costs nothing. The dedicated motorhome spaces there allow sleeping, camping and cooking, and you can stay for up to 48 hours. The council lists toilets, a fresh water tap and town information on site.

When it's closed

The Haugh is closed for the first two weeks of June for Hawick's local fair, and the council says it may also close for other events. If you're visiting in early summer, plan around that.

Everywhere else: park, don't sleep

In the council's other main car parks, sleeping, camping and cooking in a vehicle aren't allowed. But there's a useful concession: an unoccupied motorhome can be left overnight in any council car park, as long as it fits fully within a marked bay, at the same price as a car. So you can park up, head out for the evening, and sleep somewhere else – just not in the van in that car park.

Wader's tip

Because it's the only official spot and it's free, The Haugh may be busy in peak season. The council page doesn't say how many spaces there are, so have a back-up campsite in mind.
