Not clear from the source
- Coffi Lab Monmouth only lists 'Dog Friendly' as an amenity. It doesn't say whether that's inside, outside, or both.
- The Riverside Hotel's own website doesn't mention dogs. The £10 a night comes from its Visit Monmouthshire listing, which shows the same phone number as The Beaufort in Chepstow.
- The Wye Valley Hotel doesn't give its dog-room fee online.
- The Lion Inn names a dog-friendly bar area, but doesn't say whether dogs can go in its cottage, its Mane Room or its garden.
- The Royal George's room count differs between its pages (19 vs 20 rooms). It's also not clear how many of the ground-floor rooms take dogs.
- Parva Farm's site welcomes dogs on leads on the vineyard tour, but doesn't state a policy for the shop itself.
The short version
Tintern has a village-wide 'Dog Friendly Tintern' scheme run by the community website. Several venues back it up with clear rules on their own sites. Typically, dogs are welcome in the bar, garden and cafe areas, not the restaurant, and only in specific ground-floor or named rooms. Monmouth has fewer venues with a written policy. Across Monmouthshire, the council's PSPO bans dogs from many play areas, sports pitches and school grounds. Read the rules section before you let a dog off the lead in a town park.
Tintern
The Royal George, Tintern (hotel, formerly The Wild Hare)
The terms are detailed:
- "We accept well behaved dogs in our ground floor dog friendly rooms only."
- The fee is £20 per night per dog, and it's non-refundable.
- You must sign a disclaimer covering possible room damage.
- "Dogs are not permitted in the restaurant area, only the bar and coffee house."
- Dogs must be on a secure lead and not left alone in bedrooms.
The hotel's own blog says dogs are welcome "throughout most of the property including the Lower Deck Pub, Garden, and Café". The exception is the Upper Deck Restaurant. Source: terms · Source: blog
Note: older pages for The Wild Hare quoted £10 a night. The Royal George's current terms say £20 per night per dog.

The Anchor Inn, Tintern (pub next to the abbey)
"Dogs are welcome in the bar area and pub garden and must be kept on a lead at all times." The FAQ asks you to "let us know when making your booking if you will be bringing a dog". It confirms that dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating and garden areas. Parking costs £5 a day, and you can redeem it against food and drink. Source: Anchor Inn FAQs
Old Station Tintern (council-run tearoom and picnic site)
"We are a dog‑friendly site and welcome dogs in the Tearooms as well as in our picnic area." All dogs should stay on a lead, and owners should clean up. The site also sells dog treats. Note that the Old Station play area is a dog exclusion area under the council PSPO (see below). Source: MonLife

Monmouth and Trellech
The Riverside Hotel, Monmouth (hotel) – tourism listing

Abbey and hill: Tintern Abbey and The Kymin
- Tintern Abbey (Cadw): "Dogs on short leads welcome to access ground floor levels of the site." Cadw also warns that some wild plants on site may be poisonous, so don't let dogs eat vegetation. Source
- The Kymin, above Monmouth (National Trust): "We ask that dogs remain on short leads when visiting". The reason given is the badgers, bats, wild boar and red wood ants that live there. Facilities are limited. Source
Monmouthshire's dog PSPO
Monmouthshire County Council's dog-control PSPO runs from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2027. Countywide, you must:
- clear up after your dog
- carry dog bags and show them if asked
- put your dog on a lead (no longer than 2 m) if an officer tells you to
It also names 20 dogs-on-leads areas and 180 exclusion areas. The fixed penalty is £100. If you don't pay, you can be prosecuted, with a maximum level 3 fine (currently £1,000). Source: council PSPO page
Local entries from the council's annex (reference list):
- Tintern: Old Station Play Area and Sylvan View Play Area are exclusion areas.
- Monmouth: dogs are excluded from Chippenham Mead Play Area and Chippenham Mead Sports Pitches, and from the Monnow Keep and Troy Gardens play areas. The same applies to the other estate play areas in Rockfield, Wyesham and Osbaston, the Rockfield Estate and Tudor Road sports pitches, and the school and leisure-centre grounds. Monmouth Cemetery, Osbaston, is lead only. The rest of Chippenham Mead isn't listed, but check the map for each entry to see exactly where the boundaries are.
Wader's tip
In Tintern, the restaurant is usually the one place your dog can't go. Both The Royal George and The Wye Valley Hotel keep dogs out of their restaurants. If you want to eat with your dog beside you, ask for a bar or garden table when you book.
